This is an antique letter opener with the Kaiserslautern coat of arms. Kaiserslautern is a town in southwest Germany, located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate at the edge of the Palatinate Forest. The red and white colors date to 1530, the fish is thought to represent a huge fish served in 1497 by Prince Philip at a royal banquet in Heidelberg.
In good condition. The metal shows an interesting patina, the material is unknown. No attempt was made to determine if this is pewter, silver plate, or other.
