There is no question the economy is distressing to everyone, and there is no easy answer, other than having the price of crude oil drop back down to $70 a barrel. The higher costs you see, while called inflation, are largely due to the higher cost of crude. A lot of chemicals used in products originate from intermediates that were derived from crude oil. An example would be surfactants in soaps. On top of that is added the cost of fuel to ship products in a global marketplace, where a lot of stuff is manufactured in China.
The reason why the government is publically saying the economy is okay because they do not want to scare the public into a panic, as happened in the 1930's depression. But everyone including the president know the economy is crap. Watch the secretary of treasury Paulson. When he speaks you know there is a problem and he is working like a maniac behind the scenes to keep the financial markets liquid.
The whiner crap was from Texas senator. Well, things are going well in Texas since that is oil country. ExxonMobil and other big oil companies are doing fine with profits. If oil crashes to $16 a barrel, the Texas senator will be whining.
The Iraq war is no doubt a financial mess. My assessment is that the oil companies literally got the US taxpayers to cover the cost of stabilizing the political situation over there, so they could go in and get 30-year leases to extract the oil. Cheney is kind of the mid-wife on this deal.
My assessment is that Bush and Cheney have plundered the US middle and lower classes for the benefit of the wealthy. We, as US citizens are therefore dumb for letting this happen. McCain, while a republican, is at least a moderate. He is not afraid to fight with the conservatives, and is willing to work with democrats. He would have been a better choice in 2000, but Karl Rove took care of McCain in South Carolina. Obama is a breath of fresh air, and is certainly one of the best motivating speakers that I have heard in a long time. He might bring stability to some of the world since other countries may now be willing to sit down at the table. Iran is a dangerous wild card, as everyone knows.
Some really dumb people here (USA)

All my facts were straight, actual quotes from McCain and no one else. These were not statements from a left or right wing party member. Why would any sane, hard working American vote for a guy claiming our issues are all mental? Am I just dreaming that I paid 4.23 & 9/10ths per gallon of gas today and it was only a buck fifty? I was at Weggys and there were small, brand name laundry soap bottles going for like 14&15 bucks! Real people who shop every week know prices are way up on everything. If you don't want to call it a Recession, I don't care but it sure is a major case of inflation. Call it what ever you want. Our economy sucks period. Again, this is all a mental illusion and we are a bunch of whiners. The other "Dreamer" thinks a 3rd party candidate has a chance. As much as I would love to go that route my self, there isn't a chance in this liftetime that an independent will get elected to the Whitehouse unfortunately, so give up the dream. Last, Yes, McCain is greedy. If he proposed anything that would help out low to middle income families, his rich backers would bail on him. That, wasn't even the point of the last post. Mac agree's with his Swiss Bank buddy that our economy is perfectly fine, yeah, maybe for rich people. Gas goes up, which makes shipping costs go up, which makes everything consumers buy, go up. Any person with half a brain can figure out that rocket science. Sure there are other factors that also contribute, but the main factor is the war in Iraq. Just wait until we are in Iran, things will get even worse. Its going to happen. Our forces will be spread all over the place.
