Cooking Matters AmeriCorps Member (Foodlink)

Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters® empowers low-income families with the skills to stretch their food budgets so their children get healthy meals at home, as part of the No Kid Hungry® campaign to end childhood hunger in America. Cooking Matters serves families across the country through hands-on, six-week cooking courses; interactive grocery store tours; and mobile, online and educational tools. Participants learn to shop smarter, use nutrition information to make healthier choices, and cook delicious, affordable meals.
AmeriCorps programs provide opportunities for Americans to make an intensive commitment to service. The AmeriCorps network of local, state, and national service programs engages more than 80,000 Americans in projects around the nation each year.
Foodlink, the regional food bank located in Rochester, NY and serving 10 counties, is seeking an enthusiastic, highly-motivated individual to help coordinate Cooking Matters programming as part of our Community Nutrition Education Programs. Foodlink partners with the national nonprofit Share Our Strength (www.strength.org) to offer Cooking Matters to our network of agencies. Foodlink's mission is to end hunger and to lever the power of food to build a healthier community.

The ideal candidate for this AmeriCorps position is someone who values education, collaboration, and innovation and cares deeply about addressing the problems of hunger and poverty in the community.
The AmeriCorps member will work with Foodlink staff to implement effective hands-on courses that teach families at risk of hunger that healthy cooking and eating can be delicious, enjoyable and affordable.

Responsibilities:

Program Coordination (30%)
• Participate in actively seeking out and working with sites within the emergency food network to host Cooking Matters courses.
• Complete all necessary preparations for Cooking Matters classes including, but not limited to, grocery shopping, assembling class materials and transportation of equipment.
• Coordinate courses in-class, facilitating classroom activities and lending support to volunteer instructors.

Cooking Matters at the Store (50%)
• Plan and implement Cooking Matters at the Store tours with local agencies and grocery stores.
• Establish connections with local grocery stores or farmers' markets to enhance sustainability of Cooking Matters at the Store program.
• Recruit volunteers and host agencies to lead Cooking Matters at the Store tours.
• Train volunteers and host agencies in leading store tours using in-person trainings and the Cooking Matters at the Store online learning space.
• Assist with developing outreach materials for Cooking Matters at the Store.

Volunteer Management (10%)
• Assist in the management of local Cooking Matters volunteer program including: volunteer recruitment, training, responsibility delegation, retention and appreciation.

Administration/Miscellaneous (10%)
• Help to manage local online database of volunteers, supporters, partner agencies, etc
• Meet all AmeriCorps training and reporting requirements and complete a 3 month and exit month member performance evaluation and other Cooking Matters AmeriCorps reporting documentation as necessary.
• Maintain a high level of working knowledge related to nutrition standards and trends.
• Collaborate with other Foodlink departments to ensure high quality service to individuals within our network of agencies.
• Participate in other Community Nutrition activities, as necessary.

Critical Skills:
• Excellent oral and written skills and ease in talking to the public
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member
• Flexible, resourceful, and adaptable to unexpected situations
• Well organized, detail oriented, and able to successfully multi-task.
• Proficient computer skills (including Microsoft Suite)
• Certified Food Handler (ServSafe) preferred
• Ability and willingness to travel to different neighborhoods in Rochester, NY (car necessary)
• Good driving record, reliable transportation, and driver's license
• Fluency in Spanish and/or other languages a plus
• CPR and First-Aid training, or a willingness to acquire training

Working Conditions:
• Work is performed in a variety of office and kitchen settings inside and outside Foodlink.
• Member will use computer and phones extensively.
• Regularly lifts, moves and carries objects of up to 50 pounds, such as food and classroom supplies.
• Exposure to a variety of foods in residential, community, and industrial kitchens.
• In a class or tour setting, may stand and work at counters and stoves for extended periods of time.
• Frequently works outside normal working hours such as evenings and occasional weekends, and will drive frequently due to work performed in the community.

Minimum Qualifications:
• At least 18 years of age
• High school diploma, or GED
• Experience working with youth and/or adults in formal and/or informal education programs
• Strong interest and/or educational background in nutrition, cooking, culinary arts, health and wellness, health education, food systems, and food access
• Driver's license and good driving record
• Public speaking skills
• Computer skills
• Ability to balance a variety of tasks simultaneously
• Volunteer management experience preferred
• Experience working with youth and/or adults in formal and/or informal education programs
• Enrollment contingent on successful passing of criminal background search (including a FBI fingerprint-based criminal history check).

TERMS and BENEFITS
Full-time member term: 1700 hours of service within a 12-month period. Position to start September 2014.
The full-time member will receive a living allowance of $12,300, a basic health plan, training, child care (based on income eligibility), and an AmeriCorps education award of $5,645 upon successful completion of service.
