Description The Administrative Director of Pharmacy Services assumes the responsibilities to lead, plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the human and material resources of all of the pharmacies within Health System. He/she is accountable for pharmacy’s operational activities which include consistent compliance with the system’s goals, objectives and missions of quality patient care. The director initiates and promotes collaborative intra and inter departmental relationships to maximize efficiency and productivity.
A - Determines the goals and objectives for the system and the functions it is to perform relative to the philosophy, mission and goals of the hospital. Communicates such objectives to Hospital Administration and the pharmacy staff.

B - Initiates and recommends short and long range programs, develops plans and determines operations and services to obtain objectives within budget and in accordance with overall hospital policies.

C - Determines department organization policies, employee complement and budget.

D - Establishes and maintains collaborative working relationships with hospital administrators, pharmacy personnel, physicians and nursing staff within all patient care areas.

E - Oversees and directs compliance with JCAHO and other regulatory agencies.

F - Ensures distribution of high quality efficacious and cost effective drugs.

G - Active participant in Patient Care Services value analysis team (VAT).

H - Interviews, selects, orients, trains and supervises directly and indirectly all department employees.

I - Interprets, communicates and discusses with employees hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

J - Works with each employee, determines job objective, work methods and performance standards.

K - Mentors and develops the system administrator role within pharmacy services.

L - Schedules and directs the work of all Hospital Pharmacy Departments; encourages initiative, promotes collaborative practices.

M - Appraises employee performance relative to the department objectives, discussing appraisal with each employee and encourages him/her in the development of constructive habits and attitudes for improved performance.

N - Initiates, authorizes and communicates salary changes, promotions, transfers, counsels, discipline, discharge, vacation schedule, time off and all other personnel actions in a timely and effective manner.

O - Delegates duties to various department employees granting sufficient authority to complete their tasks and reviews the completed projects.

P - Encourages employees to bring concerns to his/her attention and listens to their grievances in accordance with hospital procedures. Takes prompt action or, if necessary, refers employee to higher authority.

Q - Keeps employees at all levels informed of overall hospital and pharmacy objectives and matters affecting their work and interests. Seeks comments and suggestions from employees on these matters.

R - Develops budget which addresses internal and external constraints for pharmacy.

S - Reviews P&L statements for the Apothecaries.

T - Monitors pharmacy expenses and reports to Finance and Leadership on a regular basis.

U - Works consistently with prescribers to promote the utilization of the most cost effective therapies by providing education, setting standards and establishing drug usage guidelines.

V - Coordinators with Director of Clinical Services, implementation of all Pharmacy Clinical programs within the organization.

W - Establishes controls for drug ordering to avoid over and under stocking.

X - Establishes plans to effect economy in purchase of drugs.

Y - Assigns routine purchasing duties and invoice authorization to appropriate department members.

Z - Communicates with drug sales representatives weekly on new drugs, price changes and return of outdated merchandise.

[ - Completes cost analysis surveys required by Unity Health System and other local and national associations.

\ - Determines the sources of drug purchases guided by Unity Health System contracts and the Drug Usage Committee guidelines.

] - Promotes cost effective drugs. Evaluates on an ongoing basis new and old drugs and makes formulary recommendations to the Drug Usage Committee for inclusion or rejection of drugs based on efficacy, safety and cost.

^ - Offers prescriber educational programs and materials designed to enhance optimal and cost effective drug therapy.

_ - Participates and contributes to management and professional committees and special meetings at hospital, industry and community levels.

` - Serves as member of hospital committee, such as Drug Usage Committee, etc.

a - Completes reports and special studies required for active participation in various committees.

b - Assumes the control pharmacist duties of Controlled Drug Substances, tax-free alcohol, quality assurance reports, drug inventories, preparing Federal and State government annual reports where applicable.

c - Stimulates controls such as: provides for accurate filling and labeling of all drugs; assures proper and accurate manufacturing and dispensing of all pharmaceuticals; ensures current inpatient and outpatient and department requisition charges within the framework of an approved pricing schedule; ensures pharmaceutical equipment is properly used and maintained; secures adequate housekeeping services from the Housekeeping Department; follows up recommendations on fire prevention and safety as dictated by the Safety Committee.

d - Provides for resident and prescriber education, as the need arises, to enhance optimal drug use and patient safety.

e - Offers New Drug Information and various drug related inservices for all patient care areas.

f - Provides in services for pharmacy staff and other educational programs to promote professionalism and stimulate leaning.

g - Acts as drug consultant to all members of the medical profession, investigates questions and verifies all unusual medication orders by consultation with colleagues and with members of the medical staff.

h - Consults with residents and other prescribers on improperly written prescriptions.

i - Makes arrangements to obtain drugs in emergency situations.

j - Coordinates and/or participates in annual Pharmacy and Controlled Drug Substance inventories.

k - Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the field by membership and participation in professional associations, reading in the field and attendance at meetings, seminars, etc.

l - Serves as a positive role model for staff in communicating needs, ideas, and perceptions.

m - Treats others with care and respect, maintaining privacy, confidentiality and dignity.

n - Acts as a spokesperson for the Department of Pharmacy in relationships with the medical staff, the patients, and the public.

Requirements Preferred Education
- B.S. Pharmacy required.
- MBA preferred.

Preferred Experience
- Minimum of five years Director experience in hospital pharmacy.
